Menopause and Cardiovascular Health with Jason Allen

On the EdLab podcast, Jason Allen joins host Audrey Breen to discuss why cardiovascular risk rises after menopause, the role of nitric oxide in vascular health, and whether exercise paired with dietary nitrate could enhance the benefits postmenopausal women get from training — along with why women's cardiovascular health has been so understudied, and how his graduate students have driven the lab into this work.

Nitric Oxide, Estrogen & Menopause: A Deep Dive

In this provider-focused webinar, Jason Allen and Cathy Eason take a deep dive into the science linking nitric oxide, estrogen, and menopause — how the loss of estrogen lowers nitric-oxide bioavailability, why that shift matters for women's cardiovascular health, and where exercise and dietary nitrate may help close the gap.

Intense exercise can suppress hunger — especially in women

Kara Anderson's lab-led study on exercise intensity, sex, and the "hunger hormone" ghrelin found that high-intensity exercise suppresses ghrelin and appetite more than moderate exercise, with a larger effect in women. Published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society, the work was picked up by more than 100 national news outlets.

With $3M NIH Grant, UVA Team Tests Age-Appropriate Exercise for Heart Failure

A $3M NIH grant funds Jason Allen's PRIME approach — Peripheral Remodeling via Intermittent Muscular Exercise — which trains peripheral muscle groups one at a time without imposing a large strain on the heart, delivering exercise that older heart-failure patients can actually complete. In the pilot, older patients gained more walking capacity after four weeks of PRIME than after treadmill walking.
